If you are doing the change correctly, then it can never hurt to change it too often. My thinking is that oil collects moisture and dirt over time - so it's not so much the mileage but the length of time since the last change that counts.

In the summer I might put 4000 miles on my bike in only two or three months - but in the colder half of the year I might take 6 months to ride that far.

I change my oil every four months or before any major road trip.
